Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. More Cowbell Double IPA

June 11th, 2014 by in Other Beer Reviews

I think most of you know the famous Saturday Night Live “More Cowbell” sketch, but if not (or if you just want to watch it) here’s the skit.

“I have a fever and the only prescription is more cowbell!”

Buffalo Bayou Brewing Co. in Houston crafted More Cowbell, an Imperial IPA available both on draft and in 16oz cans in the area. The 16oz can fills up a Duvel tulip glass very nicely; smaller tulips won’t hold the whole can. Speaking of the can, the text on the can makes a ton of references to the “More Cowbell” sketch and other Saturday Night Live skits. Great quotes include:

“The contents of this can will not cure fever or any other afflictions.”

“Regular consumption of More Cowbell may cause you to: stop fearing the reaper; put your pants on one leg at a time; make gold records; skin a raccoon & wear it as a hat; wrastle bears; grow a beard; buy a plaid shirt; start a land war in Asia; pick a fight with a warlock; build a school for ants; think of childhood friends and the dreams you had; clear the Savannah after every meal; and roll on Shabbos.”

“Do not taunt More Cowbell.”

Something they don’t tell you on the can is that the can itself can serve as a rather crude cowbell.

If you haven’t guessed by now, I’m a fan of the name of this beer, but how does it taste? Personally, I think it’s pretty good. The flavor doesn’t contain a whole lot of fruit; instead it’s a grassy and piney bitterness. Behind that is a caramel and bread flavor, but the beer’s intention is for you to taste the hops. The alcohol is very well hidden, and the bitterness lingers on the palate for a while in a dry finish.

Cans of More Cowbell are popping up all around Houston; it’s a good IPA and it’s not very expensive at $9 or so for a 4-pack of 16oz cans. Each of those 16oz cans pack 9% ABV, so you’re getting your money’s worth. Get ahold of this one and you too can exclaim “I gotta have More Cowbell!”
