North Coast Brewing Co. Brother Thelonious

Brother Thelonious is named after Thelonious Monk, one of the greatest jazz pianists; let's set the mood appropriately.

North Coast Brewing Company, from Fort Bragg, CA, brews Brother Thelonious as part of their American Artisan series. And holy crap, what a beer to brew in honor of a great jazz pianist. Furthermore, a donation to the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz is made for each bottle of Brother Thelonious sold. To me, a lover of jazz and musician, that's pretty awesome.

This bottle of Brother Thelonious came in the 750ml variety which has been under debate lately thanks to the New York Times (and if you aren't following us on Facebook, why the heck not?). I know it also comes in a 4 pack of 12oz bottles, but this is what the nearby grocery store had.

IMG_5462Good news for the Disneyland regulars and anyone visiting; Brother Thelonious is served at Carthay Circle in Disney California Adventure (why not Disney's California Adventure anymore? I digress...). Walt Disney World has nothing on DCA. Seriously; why doesn't Walt Disney World serve the same variety of microbrews in a park except during special events?

9.4% ABV makes the 9th season of Scrubs (the med school season, for those of you who watched to the very end) funny enough to wonder why the show was cancelled, just FYI. Let's be honest though, it's just not the same without J.D. and Elliot full-time, and "the new J.D." Lucy is some strange combination of the two. Also, Cole is a super-douche the likes of which had never been seen on Scrubs before.

Brother Thelonious is a Belgian-style abbey ale; bread, yeast, sour fruit scents emanate from a ruby red liquid with a nice tan head. The taste is complex; some banana, lemon, and other sweetness along with some bread and a little bit of bitterness. Prickly carbonation on the palate and a lingering funky yeast taste.

Y'all, seriously, this is a good beer. Go to Carthay Circle or the liquor/package/grocery store depending on what state you live in and get you some. And if you're not down with that, we got two words for ya...
