Young’s Double Chocolate Stout

Just in time to be removed from the standard beer menu at Walt Disney World (and replaced by Left Hand Milk Stout two weeks later), here's my review of Young's Double Chocolate Stout.

IMG_9722Wells & Young's Brewery in Bedford, England, is a result of a merger between Charles Wells Ltd. and Young's Brewery. Wells is known for beers such as Bombardier and Banana Bread Beer while Young's Double Chocolate Stout is probably its most popular beer in the United States. Wells & Young's also brews Kirin Ichiban under license from Kirin in Japan. Kirin Ichiban is brewed by Wells & Young's for the United Kingdom market.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout pours an opaque black with a small tan head. Light bitter chocolate scent along with a little coffee. Might also have a touch of dark fruit in the scent. Almost a light chocolate milk at first taste, but the roasted malt flavor soon follows with a touch of bitterness. The chocolate taste is more subdued than I expected, unlike Rogue Chocolate Stout. A little thin for a stout with light carbonation.

Young's is a pretty good stout and can still be purchased on property at Raglan Road. However, that's about the only place we know of now. Even the United Kingdom pavilion doesn't carry it as far as we know. Instead, they carry Guinness which, while quite popular in the United Kingdom, is from Ireland.

Personally, I'd choose Young's Double Chocolate Stout over a Guinness Draught. A tougher decision would be between Guinness Foreign Extra Stout and Double Chocolate Stout, and I'd probably choose Rogue Chocolate Stout (if it's available) over Young's.
