New Belgium Snapshot

Here’s a snapshot of a Snapshot. Thankfully, this beer isn’t called New Belgium Selfie. It’s a 2014 Epcot International Food and Wine Festival beer, so let’s discuss!

Most of the beers at Hops and Barley are wheat beers with fruity flavor to them. Leinenkugel’s Seasonal Shandy and Sam Adams Cherry Wheat both are full of fruit. Snapshot also has some fruit flavor to it, but it’s a bit more subtle.

Snapshot is a wheat ale, so as far as styles go it’s something like a Blue Moon. However, some of the Snapshot wort has souring bacteria added to it. This soured wort is blended back together with the rest to give the beer a tang and slightly sour taste.

Honestly, the portion of soured wort makes the difference here. The yellow liquid with a white, rapidly dissipating head gives off a wheat aroma with just a hint of citrus. Wheat fills the palate at first but then gives way to a light but noticeable sour orange flavor. The prickly carbonation cleanses the palate.

Snapshot’s better than I expected. That bit of sour makes it more interesting than many wheat beers. Is it as good as last year’s Dogfish Head Namaste? It’s close; Namaste has a bit more spice in the flavor than Snapshot, but I like the sour flavor in Snapshot. This is one I would drink again.
