Allagash Curieux

For my inaugural post I thought it would be fitting to select a special beer from great brewery here in New England. Allagash Brewery in Portland, ME is quickly gaining respect and popularity across the country for its infamous “White” ale. Today, being my first post, I thought I’d dig deeper into their barrels and present a unique and fantastic beer that is available year round.

Curieux by Allagash Brewing Company is a Belgian Triple Style Ale that is aged for eight (8) weeks in a Jim Beam Bourbon Barrel. Once the eight (8) week “aging” process is complete, brewers re-introduce the brew with fresh Triple. This progression results in a one of a kind Triple drinking experience.

The Beer:

Appearance: The pour color is a deep yellowish/orange with a hint of cloudiness. Upon pouring the head is an off white color that quickly breaks down as quick as its created.

Smell: A pleasant sent of vanilla is present along with hints of bourbon. I also noted a somewhat sweet fruity smell to the brew.

“Mouth Feel”: Immediately I noticed the carbonation due to the re-introducing of the Triple. Traditionally Bourbon aged ales are very flat and with little or no carbonation.

Overall: Curieux is extremely flavorful and very smooth to drink. If you’re not familiar with Belgian Triples, these brews typically pack a punch. Curieux has an ABV (Alcohol by Volume) of 11%. The result of high alcohol content is a noticeable “burn” in the flavor. This is a great sipping beer with dinner or a special occasion. At $16.00 for a 750ML bottle I highly recommend this beer for serious beer drinkers looking for a unique and one of a kind drinking experience.

Cheers,
Kyle
