Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Wild Ale

Can I have a Christmas do-over?

I’ve gotten sick twice since the Wednesday before Christmas (the flu before Christmas and strep throat before the New Year) and have felt like crap for nearly my entire vacation so far. I am feeling better today though. Because of all the medication I’ve been on, I haven’t had a drink in at least two weeks or so.

Also, since I was sick I didn’t go out New Year’s Eve. It was painful sitting around watching the live New Year’s specials. Carson Daly, Ryan Seacreast, Jenny McCarthy, Angela Kinsey, Anderson Cooper, Kathy Griffin, and everyone else I saw last night, just stop. None of you are entertaining. That goes triple for this train wreck at the end of the 2013 Rose Parade.

So needless to say I’m not in the best of moods at the moment. Way back when I wasn’t sick, I did try Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Wild.

Katie reviewed Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ Wild in the past, but this was my first time trying the beer. Little Sumpin’ Wild is Lagunitas A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ brewed with the Westmalle yeast strain instead of its usual yeast, giving it a Belgian twist and a little bit of funk.

According to Lagunitas this comes out in July, but I picked it up in November or December. I was picking up some other beers and this just happened to be on the shelf.

Sumpin’ Wild is a clear golden ale with a white, one inch tall head. Scents are tropical fruit and hops with just a little bit of yeast. The flavors are similar; tropical fruit, pine, grassy hops, and just a little bit of funky yeast. It’s definitely a pale ale base, but the yeast makes it a little bit different. It’s smooth, the flavor is a bit light, and it’s pretty nice to drink.

I don’t think I’m getting a do-over for Christmas (and even with all the illness it still wasn’t the worst Christmas), but hopefully 2013 brings an end to being sick for a long time. Happy New Year!
