Kiuchi Brewery Hitachino Nest White Ale

Sapporo. Kirin Ichiban. Asahi.

All Japanese. All thin, yellow, fizzy lagers.

IMG_0784The land of the rising sun has a stereotype of poor beer. Kiuchi Brewery doesn’t believe it needs to be that way. Their line of Hitachino Nest ales are brewed using European technology and Japanese brewing methods and ingredients. The Hitachino Nest White Ale is the flagship beer of the Nest line.

Hitachino Nest White Ale pours a cloudy yellow color with a much smaller head than expected from a witbier. Scents of citrus, a bit of yeast, and clove. There’s lemon, orange, coriander, and wheat in the taste; quite a sweet beer with very little bitterness. Active carbonation and a creamy finish with a slight bit of wheat and orange in the end.

Hitachino Nest White Ale is very good. If you’re looking to branch out from Blue Moon or just wanting an excellent, refreshing witbier, I highly recommend it. More surprising is that it comes from Japan, a country known for its thin, fizzy, yellow lagers.

We mentioned Hitachino Nest in our last Mailbag Monday as a beer to add to the Japan pavilion. Fortunately, you don’t have to wait for Disney to decide to add this; instead, head over to the Dolphin where you can enjoy a White Ale at Todd English’s bluezoo. You’ll be happy you chose this over most of what’s available in the Japan pavilion.
