The Walt Disney World Beer Tournament – Third Round

After two rounds of voting, we’re starting to get a better picture of which beers have a chance to win the first ever Walt Disney World Beer Tournament as we head into the Sweet Sixteen! Today starts round 3 of the tournament; please note that round 3 will close Wednesday, March 21 at 5:00 pm CDT. As always, click to enlarge the full bracket!

Each region is down to four beers; let’s see who’s left in the Mickey region!

Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale came from the eight seed to shock Altenmünster Oktoberfest and take down the number one overall seed! Arrogant Bastard received 60% of the vote. Guinness took care of business in its match against the hometown Orlando Brewing Pale Ale with 63% of the vote to advance to the round of 16.

Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale and Abita Amber were tied at the end of their match; we did a coin toss to determine the winner and Bell’s Two-Hearted Ale won and will advance. Abita Purple Haze was able to defeat Widmer Drifter Pale Ale with 54% of the vote and hopes to avenge Abita Amber’s close defeat.

Moving on to the Minnie region!

Safari Amber advances to the sweet sixteen by defeating Steamboat Pale Ale from Big River Grille & Brewing Works with 59% of your votes. Unibroue Éphémère took care of Widmer Hefeweizen fairly easily by earning 67% of the vote.

To set up the other Minnie region matchup, Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale won its match against Samuel Adams Imperial White with 68% of the votes. Unibroue Blanche de Chambly advanced by defeating Hövels very easily; 72% of voters supported Blanche de Chambly. Could we be looking at an all-Unibroue Elite Eight match?

Time to see how the Donald region shook out!

A second number one seed goes down as Schöfferhofer Weizen lost a fairly close one to Samuel Adams Latitude 48 IPA! Is it possible the beers from Epcot’s Germany pavilion were seeded too highly? Three of the four beers for the pavilion have gone down in the second round so far. Sierra Nevada Pale Ale earned the right to face Latitude 48 after defeating Anchor Steam with 61% of the vote.

Kona Longboard Lager was able to win its match against Abita Turbodog with 62% of the vote to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. Boddingtons English Pub Ale defeated Radeberger Pilsner to shut the Germany pavilion down completely in the second round! Perhaps the committee will review the strength of schedule for these German beers more closely next year.

Finally, let’s see the two matchups in the third round for the Goofy region!

First seed Yuengling continues to assert its dominance in the Goofy region by defeating Stella Artois with 63% of the vote. Unibroue Trois Pistoles, the fifth seed, pulls off a small upset over fourth seed Key West Sunset Ale by receiving 56% of the vote.

Murphy’s Red Creamy Irish Ale advanced to the third round by defeating Tusker Premium Lager in a close one; Murphy’s picked up only 53% of the vote. Unibroue La Fin du Monde, on the other hand, easily defeated Young’s Double Chocolate Stout with 72% of votes in the match. It’s possible that we could see two all-Unibroue matches in the Elite Eight if all four Unibroue beers remaining advance!
