Saint Arnold Icon Red

IMG_5349

When entering the Saint Arnold brewery, an icon of Saint Arnold of Metz hangs on the wall just inside the door. This painting is the inspiration for the new Saint Arnold series called Icon. This series is a quarterly release that won’t be limited to a single batch or limited release. Instead, it’s intended to be easy to find for the quarter that it’s available. The picture on the label is similar to the painting hanging in the brewery, but  [ Read More ]

Food and Wine’s Belgium Booth Misses the Target

IMG_0657

Leffe Blonde, Leffe Brune, Hoegaarden, and Stella Artois. Seemingly a varied selection of beers for the 2012 Epcot Food and Wine Festival’s Belgium booth. While they all are Belgian beers, they are also all owned by AB-InBev. While I have nothing against these particular beers, I also feel like Disney didn’t really try; they just called up the AB-InBev distributor and said “Give us some Belgian beers.” Belgium has a long and storied brewing history; it is home of six  [ Read More ]

Saint Patrick’s Day

Guinness

Saint Patrick’s day is tomorrow, Saturday, May 17, and friends, we need to talk. Not about wearing green or not, but about the massive disrespect that goes on as far as drinking beer goes on this Irish holiday. For the love of all that is holy, do not dye Bud Light (or insert any other American lager here) green and drink it and say you’re celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day. Lah-goo-knee-tuss Imperial Red

Wow, I’m totally schwasted right now. Which means only one thing…. Lagunitas is back! Me and Lagunitas have been taking a break and it’s been difficult. It’s been months! Lag texts me when it’s drunk, I tell it that every beer I’ve had by them lately sucks, then I stalk it on Facebook, what a vicious cycle! I really do think it was seeing someone else. How could it?! So for a long time I thought I was over it,  [ Read More ]

Smithwick’s and Some App Thoughts

IMG_1563

Smithwick’s is an Irish Red ale produced by Diageo, the same company that owns Guinness. If you were to visit Ireland and ask for a Smithwick’s, you would be drinking a similar ale, but the Smithwick’s served in Ireland is 3.8% alcohol by volume. In the United States, Smithwick’s is 4.5% ABV. Although this is supposed to be an Irish Red ale, it’s tough to call the color of this beer anything but brown. If you let the light shine  [ Read More ]

Chimay Red

IMG_0654

This is not the correct beer for Cinco de Mayo (thank you Katie for telling us all about Cinco de Mayo, by the way), but it’s what I had in the fridge. To be honest, my usual drink for Cinco de Mayo is a Grand Gold margarita from Little Pappacitos, but we didn’t make it out this year with friends of ours to have one. Chimay Red hails not from south of the border but all the way from Belgium.  [ Read More ]
