Abita Spring IPA

IMG_5611

Here’s something new for the spring from Abita. In addition to the Mardi Gras Bock that appears in the early part of the year, Abita started releasing this year a new seasonal called Spring IPA. This brew replaces Abita’s Red Ale, and to be honest I won’t miss their Red. Abita’s description of the beer: Spring IPA (March-May) is a West Coast-style IPA with an up-front intense hop flavor and aroma. Amarillo and Centennial hops give the brew a rich  [ Read More ]

Abita Mardi Gras Bock (again)

IMG_5387

Full disclosure: I wrote a short post on Abita Mardi Gras Bock almost two years ago. But let’s talk about Mardi Gras anyway! For full effect, play the video below while reading. By the time you’ll reading this, it will be Mardi Gras Day 2013. That doesn’t mean much for most of the country. However, in New Orleans it means the city shuts down for a party all day and night. Armed with copius amounts of food, beverages, desserts, and empty  [ Read More ]

Abita Christmas Ale 2012

IMG_5140

Jenn and Estelle aren’t surprised by this article (let’s be honest, who is?); it’s time to taste the 2012 edition of Abita’s Christmas Ale. The recipe changes annually (here are 2010 and 2011), so I’m never quite sure what to expect when tasting this one. This year’s is a dark brownish beer with reddish highlights. The head is thin and quickly dissipates. Lighter scents of spices and caramel. Spices, caramel, lemon, pine are the flavors that come to me. A  [ Read More ]

Abita Beer Flight at Boatwright’s Dining Hall

IMG_0555

For some reason, every time I see Abita, I think of Scott.  So while having dinner at Boatwright’s Dining Hall, I had to have the Abita sampler in his honor. I’ve had Purple Haze a bunch of times and enjoy it but never had a chance to try the Amber or the Turbodog until now. Amber: They described this beer as a Munich-style lager and I really enjoyed it.  Little hint of caramel and nice and smooth.  According to their  [ Read More ]

Abita Fall Fest

IMG_4729

Fall is here, and Lewis Black has some choice words for the coming of the season. ‘Oh, the leaves change color!’ – they change color for two days, then a big wind comes, you got nothing but sticks for the rest of the year. And then the weather is completely nonsense. You don’t even have a proper Fall coat. Nothing you wear is right. You wake up, it’s sunny out, you put a coat on, you go out, you’re sweating  [ Read More ]

Abita Satsuma Harvest Wit

IMG_0467

Football season is back! Who doesn’t enjoy sitting back on the couch and drinking a beer while watching  your favorite team? Unless, of course, you’re actually going to the game! Abita Satsuma Harvest Wit is part of Abita’s Harvest series, which uses Louisiana-grown ingredients to add to the flavor of the beer. Here’s Abita’s description of the beer: Abita Satsuma Harvest Wit is brewed with pilsner, wheat malts and oats. It is made with real Louisiana satsumas and spiced with  [ Read More ]

Abita 25th Anniversary Vanilla Doubledog

IMG_1831

It’s no secret I’m a big fan of Abita. One reason is that like Abita, I was born and raised in Louisiana. I didn’t like beer before I started drinking Abita Amber, and over the years since the Abita brewery has given me plenty of different beers to try, including Purple Haze, Jockamo IPA, and Andygator. 2011 was Abita Beer’s 25th anniversary, and to celebrate they brewed up a special version of Turbodog and bottled it only in 22oz bottles.  [ Read More ]

Abita Christmas Ale 2011

20111124-194816.jpg

Happy Turkey Day! After an eventful day I’m kicking off the Christmas season with an Abita Christmas Ale! I think this one is a little stronger than last year’s version. It is, however, generally the same as last year’s even though the recipe changes from year to year. I may be having a few more of these as my sister has talked me into going to Walmart tonight. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Beers and Ears!

Craft Beers Booth at Food & Wine….and Kona Pipeline Porter

IMG_9384

After a fun filled trip during opening weekend of the Food & Wine Festival, as well as both successfully completing the Wine & Dine Half Marathon, Patrick and I decided to thoroughly reward ourselves with a complete beer tasting at both the Brewer’s Collection Booth and the Craft Beers Booth. With the Brewer’s Booth complete (minus the allusive Kolsch), we set our sights on the final booth of the adventure.  Obviously we’re posting reviews in reverse order…the Brewer’s Booth post  [ Read More ]

App Review: Abita

IMG_0122[1]

Recently Abita Brewing released an iPhone app; being a big fan of Abita beer I downloaded it immediately. It does a few things, but most importantly it has a beer locator to let the user know where Abita beer can be found. Let’s look at the About screen first because it gives some information regarding the beer locator. As shown above, orange pins on the map represent locations verified by Abita, while purple pins represent locations added by users. The  [ Read More ]
