WTF? Wilco Tango Foxtrot isn’t the proper way to spell WTF in the military alphabet. Well, according to Lagunitas the word “whiskey” isn’t allowed on a beer label; therefore, the name of this beer had to use something other than whiskey. Lag started brewing this one in 2010 and calls it “a malty, robusty jobless recovery ale”. It was named this because in 2010 the economy was supposed to be recovering, but it wasn’t really recovering. Jobs weren’t being created [ Read More ]
And hello. You probably don’t remember me seeing as how my motivation to write blog posts is somewhat like my motivation to clean this house after a party. So you know, not there. As I experiment with other beers instead of relying solely on Lagunitas to fuel my alcoholism, I find that, man, there are some darn good brews out there. Devil Dog is one. It’s a 22, 10% ABV and pretty darn hoppy. Action shot! This beer is by [ Read More ]
Karbach has really been on a roll with its barrel aged beers. F.U.N. Series #003 is Hellfighter, an Imperial porter aged in bourbon barrels for at least five months. A 10.8% ABV limited edition brew, this bottle can cause a little bit of confusion because Hellfighter is also the name of Karbach’s regular Imperial porter. Unlike Bodacious and Fra-Gee-Lay, Karbach didn’t give this one a new clever name. If you like darker, more robust ales and you also have a penchant for [ Read More ]
Stillwater, Minnesota is a small historic town on the river near the Minnesota and Wisconsin border. Stillwater has its reputation of having a great line up of eating establishments near the river. On March 10th Lift Bridge brewery, Stillwater’s first brewery since prohibition held a release event for their new Irish Coffee Stout. The Irish Coffee Stout is a blend of their Imperial Stout after it has been aged in whiskey barrels with a big Milk Stout, and then infused [ Read More ]
Wow, I’m totally schwasted right now. Which means only one thing…. Lagunitas is back! Me and Lagunitas have been taking a break and it’s been difficult. It’s been months! Lag texts me when it’s drunk, I tell it that every beer I’ve had by them lately sucks, then I stalk it on Facebook, what a vicious cycle! I really do think it was seeing someone else. How could it?! So for a long time I thought I was over it, [ Read More ]
Happy Halloween! To celebrate, I’m reviewing Saint Arnold’s re-release of Divine Reserve #9 (and setting my ringtone to Grim Grinning Ghosts, of course). I last drank this Imperial Pumpkin Stout about 5 months ago; the original bottle of Divine Reserve #9 had been aged 19 months. Now it’s been about two years since this one hit the shelves for a very brief time, and Saint Arnold has blessed us with a single batch of Pumpkinator for Halloween and the holidays. Since I [ Read More ]
Boulevard’s Smokestack Series Imperial Stout is made with English malts, German hops and Belgian yeast. Would that mean if it were to be sold in Epcot it could be sold in the UK, Germany and France pavilions? Well probably not since it’s made in Kansas City. The Roasted English malts give this beer a rich malty sweetness with a dark fruit hint, such as raisin flavors. The complex malt bill also gives this beer a full amount of body for [ Read More ]
Check out the photo from my new photography studio! It may or may not be made from a cardboard box, tissue paper, masking tape, and poster board. But that’s not why you’re here… on with the beer! I previously reviewed Divine Reserve #9 by Saint Arnold about 12 months after its release; it was still delicious and perhaps even better than it tasted when first released. Here we are now about 19 months after it had been bottled and it’s [ Read More ]
I bought another pick 6 from the grocery store, and Samuel Adams Imperial White is the first brew out of the pack. Wow, this beer delivers a kick in the teeth! It has a strong citrus taste with a alcoholic bite. This is quite a sweet beer and lacks a hoppy bitterness though. It’s also a bit syrupy; the label claims it has a bigger mouthfeel and it certainly does. In my admittedly limited Samuel Adams experience, this is one [ Read More ]
Yesterday after work I met Ryan at the Flying Saucer in Houston for dinner and beer. I had this very dark brew called Black Metal by Jester King. The color certainly lives up to its name; even the head was a dark brown that mostly dissipated before I took this photo. Lots of coffee flavor in this beer and almost turns into a mocha flavor with some chocolate taste. Weighing in at 10% ABV, I ended up just sipping this the entire [ Read More ]
